Baroque Ornamentation a France vs. Italy duel!
You are invited to participate to a virtual activtiy!
This workshop on Baroque ornamentation features two composers and scholars who wrote textbooks on the subject: J.M. Hotteterre and J.J. Quantz. The workshop will include historical context, audio excerpts to understand the differences between French and Italian ornamentation, analysis of the ornament markings found in French scores and a lesson on these ornaments. Participants will be able to play the many examples of ornaments while muted. Recorderists will have the opportunity to ask questions and play some examples, on a voluntary basis. We will also approach the basics of Italian style Baroque ornamentation. Finally, we will have a look at some sonata excerpts and analyse how these can benefit from incorporating the ornaments just learned in the workshop.
Suited for: Advanced musicians (for those who want to play the ornaments); however, the workshop is open to amateurs who would like to learn more on the topic without having to actively participate and play the instrument during the session.
